no one is reading my resumes skills section

no one is reading my resumes skills section no one is reading my resumes skills section A reader writesI was wondering what your thoughts are in general on having a skills section on resumes. Ive seen pretty ambiguous skills sometimes, but I only list concrete technical skills, e.g. video editing with Adobe Premiere, NOT things like engages with industry influencers. For me especially, I thought it would be helpful because my skills are sometimes useful in my field, but Ive only been doing them outside of paid work. But Im wondering if a skills section dont carry real weight with interviewers, or if the work history section totally overshadows it.I ask because at the last few interviews I went to, it turned out they actually wanted some with a skill of mine but when I reminded them that I had that skill, their response was, Oh you do? like they hadnt even noticed. Ive even been telling a project management story in my titelseite letter about the time one of these skills came in han dy, so Im wondering how they can learn enough to bring me in for an interview but totally blow past the fact that Ive been doing exactly the special thing they wanted. I was at one today and the interviewer threw it out there wistfully, like it was pie in the sky she wouldnt be able to find We have so many promo clips to edit for the webpage. It would be SO nice to get a chocolate teapot crafter who could edit video, but I mean, what are the chances that someone knows how to craft chocopots AND edit video?Do I need to move the Skills section to the top of my resume? Do I need to make it bigger? Does it have to live strictly in my cover letter from now on because interviewers just dont care about stuff beyond job history descriptions? Or should I not sweat it because it keeps turning out to be a bonus skill rather than the meat of the job?Yeah, I think a lot of people just arent bothering to read that section or retain it, largely because so many peoples skills sections are totally useless (listing things that are a given in their field, like Word, or listing ridiculous subjective self-assessments like strong communication skills, works well in groups and independently, and other useless proclamations).I wouldnt move the section or make it bigger. Instead, if the stuff youre including in there is integral to what you want to convey about yourself as a candidate, find a way to include it in the work section, which is really the most important part of your resume and your candidacy. For instance, instead of listing video editing in your skills section, talk about it in a bullet point under the jobs where you edited videos. Doing thatwill also allow you frame it in terms of what accomplished with the skill, instead of just noting the skill itself and thats always better and more convincing.

Reddits Alexis Ohanian wants to be your mentor

Reddits Alexis Ohanian wants to be your mentorReddits Alexis Ohanian wants to be your mentorAlexis Ohanians name may be synonymous with Reddit, but lately, hes been creating some new notable partnerships. Ohanian is also half of the power couple formed with wife, tennis legend Serena Williams. The self-avowed hardcore coffee drinker also recently partnered with 1850 Coffee a heritage brand launched by Folgers. Theres also Initialized Capital, the San Francisco-based early-stage venture capital firm Ohanian co-founded. So how does Ohanian choose his partnerships and find ways to make them flourish?Ladders caught up with Ohanian who shared tips on creating smart partnerships, finding your values and carving out a spectacular career whether or not youre a millennial.Check the boxesWhen asked how he chooses partnerships, Ohanian said This is going to sound super corporate, but I think about what my values are as a person. It has to fit into this rubric. I think to myself are ansicht pa rtnerships checking all these boxes? If they are, its a partnership I can look into.Dont compromise on your reputationOhanian admitted one of his least surprising goals is making the world suck less. He admits that Its not quite as aspirational as making the world a better place, but the same idea stands. For that reason, when choosing partners, Ohanian believes This is a partnership that does some good. And it has to be done in a way that doesnt compromise the reputation Ive built for myself.Coming together for the greater goodOhanian doesnt share the zero-sum philosophy, in which people believe the successes of one person means the loss of someone elses opportunities. If you believe in a zero-sum world, you believe if you do well then someone else cant. I dont believe in that. Instead, Ohanian says I believe in all my partnerships creating something good for something else.Be worth investing inIn his guise as an angel investor, Ohanian says I definitely didnt aspire to be a VC. I dont think anyone should (he chuckles). All the folks weve hired have been operators. Ohanian explains operators as people who have been there. People who know how to Sling code. Or theyve done financial models or built absatzwirtschaft plans. He believes these are people who understand not just their companies, but the difficulties of creating and sustaining a new business. His startup mentality keeps Ohanian happy and engaged. The reason Im excited to wake up every day as a VC is because its a startup. It also allows him to have more interesting downtime. I keep thinking about the interesting conversations I have at home over dinner. I talk about the amazing founders that I meet. I love talking about all the startups. The 3 years I was working on the Reddit turnaround we went from 50 to 400 employees. Coming home from that was exhausting. Those arent fun stories to have at the dinner table. I relish the fact that I get to work on things that are fun now. And I want us to do it for dozens and dozens more (companies).Learn from your failuresOhanian says So much of what we do for early-stage companies is help founders avoid the landmines, which he immediately recognizes because weve seen them over and over again. And thats a big part of our job. He also guides startups by providing their first 10 customers through our network or helping them close a first hire. He describes these as The things we can do because of our reputation. We get to make these investments in such an early stage that were doing a lot for the company. Its a high leverage time to be investing in the company.Aint nothing but a numberOhanian wants to disabuse people of the notion that new hires or new businesses favor millennials. Were not bias to a certain age. In popular culture, we have the idea of the millennial founder. Some of our founders are on our second or third career.Ohanian references a freight forwarding software company called Flexport which updates an international industry tha ts been historically managed through phone calls and a spreadsheet. Ohanian says Theyre building something demonstrably cheaper, faster. There are few college grads obsessing about freight or old-fashioned businesses. They want to build the next Snap.Thats why Flexport is so successful. There are very few people clamoring to build software for that.Work with OhanianReady to turn your side hustle into the next big thing? nows your chance. Ohanian and 1850 just launched their co-branded Bold Pioneer contest in which the winner receives $18,500 in funding and one-on-one beratung from Ohanian.

Building Resilience Between Jobs

Building Resilience Between JobsBuilding Resilience Between JobsHere are two methods to improve yur habits and your outlook when you need it most - when youre searching for a job.Its not so bad being out of work not at first, anyway. You get to sleep a little later, see the kids off the school, play with the dog a bit, relax and recharge. How nice just to be able to breathe againBut as the days turn into weeks and months, its not unusual for the inherent stress and strain of a job search to start wearing you down mentally, physically and emotionally. And, for many, that emotional component is the most debilitating, according to a December New York Times/CBS nachrichten poll of the unemployedNearly half of the adults surveyed admitted to feeling embarrassed or ashamed most of the time or sometimes as a result of being out of work. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the traditional image of men as breadwinners, men were significantly mora likely than women to report feeling ashamed most of the time.In other words, whether you want to admit it or not, its as likely as a coin flip that youre feeling increasingly vulnerable from being out of work.Theres no shame in this. It simply is what it is. But if you are feeling embarrassed, you likely know what John Bradshaw, author of in Healing the Shame that Binds You, meant when he wrote Shame has a way of magnifying when we keep it to ourselves. So if you havent yet, make a point of sharing your feelings with a loved one or someone you deeply trust. Doing so can be surprisingly cathartic and personally validating. So what else can a executive-level job seeker do to increase the odds of NOT feeling embarrassed or ashamed while out of work? What steps can you take to re-energize your job search, confidence and dignity?Bradshaw writes, Our feelings are who we are at any given moment. Therefore, its essential that we manage them actively. One way to do that is by attending to each of what Bradshaw calls our six Basic Dependenc iesSelf-Value Needs Mattering, being taken seriously, being wanted for oneself and having a strong sense of selfStimulation Experiencing pleasure, fun, excitement, challenge and playSociality Mirroring, being echoed and having/being in healthy relationships with othersStructure Having direction, boundaries, limits and predictabilitySecurity Having proper food, clothing, protection and medical careStroking Being recognized, given attention, hugged, encouraged and praisedTry this Every morning, rate the level of neediness you feel in each of the six categories. Then identify a specific action you could take to help improve one of your weaker ratings. Make a point of doing precisely that sometime during the day. Attend to all six of your Basic Dependencies over the course of the week.Harry V. Roberts and Bernard F. Sergesketter offer another interesting approach in their book, Quality is Personal. Their Personal Quality Checklist is an easy-to-use structure for eliminating unwant ed behaviors, like procrastination, negative thinking or whatever impedes you from being at your best.Step 1 Make a list of five or six behaviors/attitudes/feelings youd like to extinguish. (I wrote mine on an index card so I could carry it with me at all times. Using your BlackBerry or iPhone would work equally well.)Step 2 Throughout a given day, keep a tally of how many times you catch yourself doing what youre trying to stop.Step 3 At the end of each day, total your tallies and strategize about your game plan and tally targets for tomorrow.Step 4 Repeat Steps 2-3, replacing items on your list as you extinguish them. One of the keys to success and fulfillment in both our personal and professional lives, write Roberts and Sergesketter, is a heightened sense of awareness. The power of the simple stroke tally to heighten awareness is extraordinary. Habits quickly change for the better.I have personally found the Personal Quality Checklist to be a very effective process. Two notes , though, based on my own experienceDont freak out The number of tallies you mark during the first few days can be staggering This is perfectly natural and the higher the count, the better. Thats because high initial tallies set the stage for dramatic tally reductions as you increase your focus on better managing your targeted behaviors/attitudes/feelings.Flip it over While the front of my index card (Side One) tracked what I wanted to extinguish, I used the back of the card (Side Two) to track the behaviors/attitudes/feelings that I wanted to specifically nurture by doing so. Side Two provided a nice balance between more and less. But it also offered some excellent suggestions for what activities could replace the extinguished Side One activities, which turned out to be a very nice surprise. The ultimate antidote for feeling embarrassed or ashamed while out of work and the instruction for re-energizing your job search, confidence and dignity is this As you become increasingly con scious and purposeful about what you choose to do (and what you choose not to do) youll start connecting back to that energy and resilience you felt when at the TOP of your game.I invite you to embrace that person inside you the person you can be, the person you want to be the person you truly are.
